If you’ve been trying to conceive for a while, you already know how overwhelming it feels to manage everything - the tests, the appointments, the emotions, the hope. The last thing you need is another thing to worry about.
So let’s take this slowly, simply, and calmly.
You may have heard the term PFAS - often called “forever chemicals.” The Australian government have recently created new guidelines relating to levels of PFAS. (If you want more information on what the Aust govt are doing click here). They’re used in thousands of everyday items, from non-stick pans to mascara to waterproof jackets. And you’ll find plenty of dramatic headlines about them online.
Here’s the truth: You don’t need fear. You just need knowledge - and a few easy steps.
Why PFAS Matter for Fertility (in both women and men)
Emerging research suggests that high exposure to PFAS may interfere with:
hormone balance
menstrual regularity
egg quality
implantation
pregnancy outcomes
reproductive hormone and sperm quality and levels
The concern? It's not because your body is fragile, but because these chemicals cling to our system and can disrupt the endocrine (hormone) pathways that support conception and a healthy pregnancy.
This isn’t about blame. It’s about empowerment.
Where PFAS Show Up
Most people come into contact with PFAS through:
old non-stick cookware
stain-resistant carpets and furniture
waterproof jackets or activewear
fast-food wrappers + takeaway packaging
tap water in certain areas
some makeup and skincare
household dust
You can't avoid everything - and you don’t need to. Reducing exposure, even a little, supports your fertility far more than you might expect.
Simple Steps You Can Start Today
Here are the practical things that make a real difference:
Choose safer cookware - swap out your non-stick (especially teflon-style pans) for stainless steel, cast iron, ceramic or glass - bonus: they'll last longer
Don’t microwave plastics. A plastic 'microwave safe' bowl means that the microwave is safe for the bowl - not for you. Simple solution - transfer food into ceramic/glass bowls/plates before you microwave.
Avoid 'waterproof' or 'stain-resistant' products - PFAS often hide in carpets, sofas, mattress protectors, clothing, outdoor gear - check the label and choose PFAS-free where possible
Reduce consuming packaged and fast foods - I know we all love a good take-away but think about the health cost. PFAS has been found in grease-resistant wrappers, pizza boxes and microwave popcorn bags. Cooking at home significantly reduces your exposure
Filter your drinking water - many countertop or jug filters are effective here - look for PFAS reduction, reverse osmosis or activated carbon
Check your beauty and skincare products - avoid ingredients ending in "-fluoro" or PTFE in makeup, lotions and sunscreens
Wash fruit and vegetables well - this helps remove the PFAS particles carried through soil and water. Grab a vegetable scrubbing brush and keep it handy for when you unpack your groceries
Support your body's natural detox pathways. Getting good sleep, hydration, eating fibre-rich foods, and regularly moving your body, helps your body process environmental toxins more effectively
The Goal Isn’t Perfection - It’s Protection
We know that added stress impacts your fertility .... but remember your body is resilient, wise, and capable. With the right information you can reduce the stress and put things into action. You’re not trying to eliminate everything - you’re simply reducing the load your body has to carry so that it has more space to focus on what you want most: healing, regulating, and creating fertile ground. Here's a quick checklist you can pop on your fridge to change your products and your lifestyle to protect your fertility.
If You Want More Support
Inside my fertility program and workshops, I utilise mind-body medicine to help you strengthen your nervous system, reduce the stress load on your body, and create the internal conditions that support conception - physically and emotionally.
You're not alone in this. And you don’t need to overhaul your life to start protecting your fertility.
Just one mindful step at a time.
