Is Mother's Day Causing You Angst?

There’s no denying Mother’s Day is hard. It’s almost impossible to escape it and for many this causes anxiety!

If you prefer to watch rather than read click here to watch my 2022 Mother’s Day Message. If not, keep reading …

Everywhere you look there’s a reminder … sales in your inbox, ads on TV, reminders on social media. Then there’s people asking how you’re celebrating. How can you tell them that you don’t want to even think about it, that you just want to hide under the doona and escape from the whole world for the day! Yup, you can’t really …

So, on goes your well practised brave face and the fake smile is plastered on while you tell people your plans.

But, the truth is you were hoping this was the year … the year you too would be celebrated as a mother. But it hasn’t happened and that just freaking sucks!

But, the truth is it’s okay. It’s okay to not want to celebrate Mother’s Day - even with your own mum. It’s okay to stay away from family functions. It’s okay to feel exactly how you feel. Trust me, it’s okay!

So, what can help you survive this dreaded day?

My first tip: stay away as much as possible from social media. All those posts will do nothing but upset you. So why put yourself through it. Avoid, avoid, avoid.

If you’re feeling strong enough to acknowledge a mother figure in your life I recommend catching up with them either before - or, better still - after Mother’s Day. Let all the hype die down and just enjoy being with this special person doing something you both love

Another tip is to spend the day with your partner - or someone close to you - away from the crowds, away from all the Mother’s Day celebrations. Maybe order in or cook up your favourite food and just hang out like you used to before your fertility was the focus. Maybe even go on a roadtrip and pull out your favourite driving playlist.

Or finally, take care of YOU. Spend the day focusing on self-care - because remember - self-care is not selfish, it’s protecting your mental health and wellbeing.

You may want to go on a hike, go swimming, bake for friends. You may want to set up a spa day for yourself or, you may want to wrap yourself in a warm cosy blanket and watch movies all day.

You don’t need my permission - or anyone else’s for that matter! You need to give yourself some space and grace. Don’t push through to meet other people’s expectations.

Look after yourself. This is your personal journey, no one else’s, so don’t be afraid to do it your way. Be the best self you can be, whatever that looks like on the day.

Sending big love and warm hugs

Therese x
