Sporting groups are key environments for young people to connect. They develop amazing relationships and they bring out the best, and sometimes the worst, in people.
Young people between 14yrs and 28yrs are at their most vulnerable stage for developing a mental illness such as depression, anxiety, bi-polar mood disorder and schizophrenia.
It is vital that club personal are aware of the indicators of mental illness and how to intervene effectively to support not only the young person and also their family.

Clubs are also a key place where young people can feel safe, respected, supported and valued. It is up to each club to create an environment that enhances the protective factors that build and support wellbeing and minimises risk factors to mental health issues.
This year I have gone back to my roots and developed a mental health and wellbeing program, called Live Well, Play Well for sporting groups and the Mindful Cricketer Program. The Live Well, Play Well program can be supported by local council grants helping turn your club into a safe space providing a culture of success to help people flourish in their skills, endeavours and relationships.
I have grown up with sport all around me. My father was a keen sportsman in his day playing both cricket and VFA football. My mother loved her tennis competition and I tagged along.

As for myself, as a child I tried my hand at many endeavours. I played tennis, softball, volleyball and netball. I was on the stage singing, dancing and limbering (a type of gymnastic dance) from the time I could hold a tune. I performed in competition calisthenics for about 25yrs.
I met my husband at our local cricket club where he was playing and I was scoring! I even filled in for our ladies’ team a couple of times.
In the cricket arena I have scored for both my sons’ cricket teams through many seasons, been a team manager, an active committee member of a Premier Cricket Club, volunteer, and Secretary of a local cricket club and I have qualified as a Level 1 Umpire many years ago.
Combining my love for group sports and also community clubs along with my expertise in mental health promotion I have tailored my training programs from working in schools to the sporting context.
Please contact me on M:0401343086 if you would like to talk about how you can apply for a local council grant to take your sporting club to the next level. How you could develop a club that helps everyone thrive regardless of their skill level. Develop the skills to safely have conversations with those at risk of developing a mental illness. A club that knows how to connect with local services for maximum support to individuals and families. Be a part of a club that provides a safe space for anyone who has experienced difficulties to return with support and honour.
